Glasgow Fort at Christmas Time
Who said Christmas shopping had to be boring? Whether you are going gift shopping for a family member or secret Santa gift or even popping into M&S for your Turkey or some milk and bread Glasgow Fort have really pulled out all the stops to help make shopping such a fun experience for all the family this Christmas. Read on to find out what festivities you can expect in the lead up to Christmas and how you can make your shopping trip a fun day out for all the family.
We started our day down at M&S where there is a lovely big Santa's Sleigh that kids - and big kids can hop in for a Festive pic (side note: there is no shortage of festive photo ops) We then popped into a few shops to browse & do a bit of gift shopping before reaching the massive Nutcracker statue and Grandfather clock outside Next! Again another fantastic photo opportunity and if you happen to be at Glasgow Fort during midnight shopping dates (17th-23rd Dec) you may be lucky enough to discover a few surprises popping out of the Grandfather clock now and then - in the meantime it makes for a fun boomerang!
TOP TIP: If shopping at the weekend why not pop into Lush and check if they are holding a bathbomb making workshop? They do these regularly between 1-3pm (Lucy is obsessed with this shop and has me check this on a regular basis) - sometimes they are free and if not you just pay the cost price of the bathbomb - another fun activity and a great way of making a handmade stocking filler!
After some pics at the Nutcracker the kids were getting a bit peckish so we grabbed a quick snack from Greggs and headed for a wee nosey around the Christmas Markets - This to me is an absolute godsend! I love Christmas Markets but I don't enjoy the crowds that come with them and you can browse here without being uncomfortably close to others. Glasgow Fort has many of the stalls that you see in the city centre such as the food stalls where you can taste different treats from around the world, cheese stall, handmade christmas decorations and ...wait for it - Velvet colouring posters - Do you remember these from your childhood days? I was soooo excited about these and will definitely be buying as stocking fillers for the kids! They also have the giant inflatable snowglobe - again this makes for a fab photo op - please note there is a fee for this.
Near the Christmas Markets you will also find the giant illuminated key and the Carousel - another great addition not only to keep the kids occupied but to hop on as a family and have some fun! Lucy was a bit scared at first especially being on the horse (she usually ops for the wee bus or something) but once she went round it once she wanted to go on it again and again. Its costs £2 to ride the carousel and all proceeds are being donated to CHAS so as well as a fun little activity for you all to take part in you will also be helping support a fabulous charity.
Now we did say we would give you some tips on how to turn your shopping trip into a family fun day out without having to go elsewhere so why not do what we did and book into the Vue Cinema to take a couple of hours out from shopping to chill, recharge your batteries and have some quality family time? The Vue has plenty of offers throughout the week that means adding this into your shopping trip doesn't have to be expensive - for example if you go on a Monday its only £3.99 per person (VIP seats tend to be £1 or so more) - or if you have Meerkat Movies you can get 2 for 1 on Tuesdays & Wednesdays - and they don't mind if you take your own snacks!
By the time the movie was done we had worked up an appetite - and again one of the great things about Glasgow Fort is the variety of places to eat! This time we headed for Chiquitos - we hadn't been here before so it was all very new to us - and we loved it! - I think the sombreros had alot to do with that hahaha!! #AddedFun the staff in there were so nice too! Again a lot of the restaurants do set menus / family deals / discounted kids menus etc to help make it more affordable.
After dinner we headed to pick up a final few wee things before heading home and by this time it was dark so everything was a lit up and magical looking.
Another thing we love about Glasgow Fort is ...FREE PARKING! So you can literally spend the full day here if you want to and it wont cost you a penny in parking -I've got to say I used to get quite stressed about finding a space during the Christmas shopping madness but the Multi-Storey has definitly relieved this haha!
TOP TIP - If like me, you still don't have a clue what to buy for people you have known most of your life (shocking I know) you can now purchase a Glasgow Fort Gift Card! #Lifesaver - You can find a wee kiosk selling these between The Body Shop & The Management Suite.
So there you have it! How to do a spot of Christmas shopping while not only keeping the kids entertained but spending some quality family time together having fun and making some festive memories! This is a busy time of year for anyone no matter who you are or what you do so I love the fact that I can get some of my shopping done while actually having some fun with my kids rather than them moaning about how many more shops we have got to go to!
We definitely recommend popping up and taking in the festivities - pose for some fun pics, have a walk around the Christmas market, feel like a kid again on the carousel - and if you must pop back again when the kids are in bed (because we know Santa needs a helping hand to tick off the items on their Christmas lists) then why not head up between 8pm-11pm during the midnight shopping dates where there will be some added entertainment and random acts of kindness!
TOP TIP - Be sure to share your photos on social media using the hashtag #GlasgowFortChristmas to be with the chance of winning a stocking full of prizes in their fab Christmas competition.
